Psychotherapy

If you are looking to explore and reflect using creative, embodied and conversational ways in psychotherapy. This might be for you. Some people find this kind of psychotherapy helps to untangle their worries and realise their potential. In addition to work towards improving self-awareness and understanding of your whole self, your creativity, your body, movement, gesture awareness. Both using your conscious cognitive thoughts, and your hidden if you like, non verbal, subconscious self. You can begin to notice and consider some initial subtle or neglected parts, such as body language we have developed through out our life, from developmental movement, to family and generational body habits and health.

Exploring in creativity, is a free flow, where you may choose to play, make, or move. This can allow clear messages from different aspects of yourself to be given attention. For example, if you make an image, with out thinking about it as you make it, like a child can just use pencils and scribble without thinking what shall I draw, they will just explore and make a gesture and marks with the tools. So can you. Often what comes up in the image is some information which we can converse over. Patterns may emerge, surprises, realisations and acceptance are possible. This can be the same for using movement and play. Thus it is possible to bring about an integration of the many aspects of your being through embodied awareness, creativity and conversation.

In movement, we can explore together, non stylised, instinctive explorations of energy and gesture. In a contained safe space with the opportunity to have your movements reflected back to you, to try on movements that you may be curious about, or to allow and kindly support your energetic moving body to be able to have protected time in a safe place to explore ways of moving and feeling that in ‘normal’ day to day living there is no room for. This can be a powerful mysterious process which can have a meditative effect on us, and offer up interesting metaphors all in our physical being.

If you are interested in psychotherapy theory and practice. Key approaches that currently inform me and my work include embodiment, both developmentally, trauma stored in the body and in somatic mindful practices. As well as dancing to music, which inspires movement and mood explorations. Art therapy, ecopsychology, Jungian analysis, relational process, person centred, transpersonal, psychoanalytic. In the neighbouring mental health fields I am interested in mindfulness based therapy and meditation, eco and horticulture therapies. I am also interested in Buddhist psychology and authentic movement practices.

Who I work with and who can I help?

People who might be seeking to explore feeling low in mood, difficulties in their relationships, self image, relationship with their body, moving through life stages, feeling stuck, anxiety about change. Sadness and anger, difficult early life experiences, neuro-diversity, dyslexia, disability, the impact of health issues, loss, loneliness, spirituality, coping mechanisms, bullying, abuse, loss of interest and motivation, feeling numb, being an outsider, sense of belonging, feeling heard and or seen, are some examples of the struggles and themes that people of different ages have shared and worked with.

Over all if you are looking for this kind of psychotherapy and would like to try, we can certainly arrange an initial meeting to further assess our mutual suitability for working together.

How I work

I offer a safe confidential place to meet. I will support you to feel comfortable. I will listen to you and have no expectations. We will work together at your pace. You are welcome to talk, use creative ways, such as art making, movement and dance. I am versatile in my practice, aiming to meet your individual needs. I do not create a session plan. It is important to let what you need to bring, arrive and emerge. It may take you a few sessions to feel comfortable and get the hang of how it works.

location

I currently offer two indoor options to meet. A room with chairs a space for mainly talking and a large hall, for mainly moving. All meeting places have free parking and both are on a bus route.

I work in North Yorkshire on the edge of East Yorkshire, close to the coast, in the area known as the Yorkshire Wolds.

I can also meet with you on a video call. I also have access to meeting places in York and Beverley.

session times

It is normal when ‘in therapy’ to meet once a week for one hour/50 minutes, but this is not mandatory. We can meet more or less frequently: the choice is yours.
